The Sinhala people, heirs to a sun-centered cultural heritage, sustain their lives through the blessings of the sun and honor the Buddha, the spiritual “Sun” who dispels the darkness of sansara. Each year during the New Year, they offer their first harvest to the Buddha Sasana in the Aluth Sahal Mangallaya, while also expressing gratitude to the sun. Respecting elders’ blessings, they observe the sacred oil-anointing ritual with devotion.
In 2026, this ceremony was held on April 15 at Jetavanaramaya Monastery, following traditional practices. With the Maha Sangha and devotees present, participants received blessings and accumulated great merit for their spiritual journey.
